The McKinsey 7S Framework is a management model developed in the 1980s by McKinsey & Company consultants. It identifies seven interconnected internal elements critical to organizational effectiveness and alignment:

  1. Strategy: The plan to achieve competitive advantage.
  2. Structure: Organizational hierarchy and division of responsibilities.
  3. Systems: Daily processes and workflows.
  4. Shared Values (Core): The organization’s mission and culture (central to the framework).
  5. Skills: Organizational capabilities and competencies.
  6. Style: Leadership and management approach.
  7. Staff: Employee demographics, talent, and development.

Key Insight:

The framework emphasizes that all seven elements must align and reinforce each other for success. It’s often used to diagnose organizational issues, manage change (e.g., mergers), or improve performance. Unlike prescriptive models, it highlights interdependencies between "hard" elements (strategy, structure, systems) and "soft" elements (shared values, skills, style, staff).
