The name "TOWS" rearranges the SWOT acronym to emphasize linking internal and external elements.

How It Works

The TOWS Matrix creates four types of strategies by pairing SWOT components:

SO Strategies (Strengths-Opportunities)

Use strengths to exploit opportunities.

ST Strategies (Strengths-Threats)

Use strengths to mitigate threats.

WO Strategies (Weaknesses-Opportunities)

WT Strategies (Weaknesses-Threats)

Minimize weaknesses to avoid threats.

Example: A company with outdated technology (weakness) invests in upgrades to avoid losing market share to tech-savvy rivals (threat).
